The final ship launch from Smith's Dock of the North Islands on October 15, 1986.

"Era ends on tragic Tees..." read the headline on the front page of the Evening Gazette 25 years ago on October 15, 1986. The 'North Islands' a 15,000 tonne cargo ship slid down the slipway and into the River Tees, this was the very last ship launched from Smith's Dock, which closed down for good shortly afterwards.Smith'sk MD Roger Spence with ship number SD14 later named as North Islands behind. It was commissioned by Cuban owners and was destined to become the last ship to slide down the slipway at Smith's Dock in February 1987.
